Giving Flight of the Conchords a Chance....
I first saw this New Zealand duo during one of their live performances on HBO. The live show is completely musical, and although the songs seemed creative enough, I didn't give them a chance. Unless it's an Adam Sandler song, it's just not funny enough for me. I'm looking at you JIMMY FALLON.
Then I caught an episode of their series on HBO a few weeks back starring my favorite current SNL cast member, Kristen Wiig. She played a mutual love interest of both Bret and Jemaine, and they all weave a web of lies that grow more absurd as the show progresses. They meet while her character is searching for her missing epileptic dog in the park.
In the context of the show's script, the songs make more sense, but they are not the best part of the show. They are interjected in the form of thematic music videos that relate to the plot in some way. I find myself laughing more at Murray the manager and Jen the stalker than the main characters. Don't get me wrong, I really doubt the show would work without Bret and Jemaine.
Flight of the Conchords season 2 continues Sundays at 10pm pm on HBO right before Eastbound and Down.
Kenny Powers Highlight Reel
This is the complete training video from episode 4 of HBO's Eastbound and Down. If you saw the show, it puts the 9/11 reference with the flag backdrop into context. If you haven't heard of it, now you have no excuse.
Danny McBride plays Kenny Powers, an ex-pro pitcher down on his luck trying to make a comeback. His character reminds me of the one he played in The Foot Fist Way, but is less self-aware and much more ignorant and narcissistic.
He has played great supporting roles in Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Superbad, and Hot Rod to name a few. His independent film The Foot Fist Way really shows his comedic skill, so much so it got picked up by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay for distribution. They continued working with McBride, becoming executive producers of Eastbound & Down.
Ferrell also plays a car dealership owner with a great wig worthy of laughs in itself. I first saw the pilot about a year before it actually aired on HBO, (Thanks Mininova) so I am ecstatic that the first season is underway. You may recognize some of the EB&D cast from smaller roles they played on Reno 911, namely Principal Cutler played by Andrew Daly (I saw him today on Reno as a pervy guy in the park with a fishing hat and glasses) and Steve Little, who plays the music teach who emulates Kenny Powers. (I'm pretty sure Steve was the naked bank robber with a speech impediment on an episode of Reno 911 where he repeatedly shouts to Dangle, "I'm gonna sue you like your mother didn't know!" while being handcuffed and put in the squad car.)
The show returns for it's fifth episode Sunday, March 15th at 10:30pm on HBO.
I just noticed that HBO is playing the first 4 episodes right now as I type this. Now I can catch the jokes I missed while laughing over them the first time...

Comedy Central Roast of Larry the Cable Guy

I've been seeing the ads on Comedy Central for over a month now. I have always had an problem with "Larry" or Dan Whitney as he is known by family and friends. A few weeks back on the Stern show, Artie Lange asked the question on mine and everyone elses mind: would they roast Dan or his alter-ego redneck persona? I finally got the answer today from the Comedy Central site featuring an "uncensored" ad for the show. (I use quotes with their term uncensored, because they allow the word fuck but bleep Lisa Lampanelli's use of the word cunt, not sure why)
Anyway, they show a clip of Jeffrey Ross the roast veteran, going on about the reality of Larry. Quote:
"This is ridiculous...(he's) not even a real person..why don't we just roast Dora the Explorer or Popeye the sailor man!"
I will have to watch it now that I know there will be some reality cast upon his facade. The Comedy Central Roast of Larry the Cable Guy airs Sunday March 15th at 10pm/9c
UPDATE: They showed the Blue Collar Comedy Special earlier today, and it revitalized my hate for this douchenozzle. The other 3 I can tolerate, even if I don't laugh, because they are realistic (albeit somewhat amplified) portrayals of the comics themselves. I wonder what Jeff Foxworthy actually thinks of Larry. Enough about that.
